Hybrid Disk Drives - Part 1
December 19th, 2006
I don’t think I’ve read John C. Dvorak since he confused cascading with inheritance. But Sombody did get it right, so I won’t go in to that. Any tech writer can wander into unknown waters.
But one of his newer articles, The Sony Blu-ray Debacle, was where this starts. Specifically, the “Here Comes the HHD Dept.” section, Where Dvorak writes on Hybrid Hard-Drives (HHDDs).
Dvorak mentions “this may be the first attempt to do any sort of word-of-mouth-type viral marketing for hardware such as this.” Some wonder if they are just a marketing gimmick. That’s my disclaimer.
Windows Vista has Two new texhnologies based of flash memory:
- ReadyBoost
- Uses a drive - usually a usb flash drive - as a secondary cache.
- ReadyDrive
- Utilizes the new HHDDs to improve load times. While one of the targes is the sleep/hibernate cycle, It’s scheme also reminds me of Win98’s defragmenter: Vista keeps track of frequently used programs and system files, and automatically moves them to Flash.
In the second half, This is applied to Linux.
