On the Scale of Multiplicity

March 4th, 2006

Talking - or, more accurately, listening - to James often gets me thinking. While I am not the the source of his latest oration, in additon to a certain Outer Limits episode, has left me wanting to write something.

Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness. - 2nd Timothy 3:16 (ASV)

Personally, I have no reason to question anything said after the time of Samuel, but that is his subject, and not mine. (I haven’t read the post yet, this is from memory)

I would not be supprised that, since mankind is able to think of species alternate to earth’s, that God might have such implemented elsewhere. And by implemented, I would say that Human beings are implemented - They phyisically exist, not just theoretically.

I would also not be supprised that, God knowing the parameters of matter, has created the system that would work at all. By this, I mean the entire ecosystem of Earth.

In my current European History class, Our textbook claims that an argument against the Copernican system Was that Joshua, in one of the battles of Israel’s original conquest, called for the “Sun to Stand Still” (Joshua 10:12). Joshua’s request was due to his point of reference, which would still be accepted today as a point of refrence, not a scientific theorem.

Indeed, When a group of engineers is asked to design somthing to certian specifications, be it a style, or proformance expectation, ar any number of things, there is always the trouble of the engineer implementing it - which is work outside the specification, outside the original request. Such is the case with Joshua, where it is recorded that he saw a result, caring more of what was to be done with it (and who did it) than how it was done.

So the Bible may speak in Metaphore, may be seen a ’simple’ from all we know with our fancy research and conjecture. It needn’t invalidate events of the Bible - for all story tellers are somewhat selective.

By the way, the “Eye of the Needle” was meant for pedestrian traffic. Ifa a camel were to fit through, it would need to be totally unloaded and shuffle through on its knees.
